EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED - APRIL 2017

Picture
As part of the Ministry of Youth Development - Youth in Civil Defence Fund, Northland Youth Theatre collaborated with the New Zealand Police and Civil Defence Northland to create a short video project “Expect the Unexpected”

The project happened in the April School Holidays. NYT provided the director, camera man and support people to lead the project. Karen Poutai-Strunski was on board as the police support person, she transported the youth provided kai and consistent mentoring through-out the project.
Civil defence organised a day of training with Red Cross search and rescue team and the Whangarei fire department.

NYT hosted a premier evening which was a great success with whanau, police and civil defence all coming to congratulate the boys involved.

The video featured a group of 9 young people undertaking various daily activities e.g. boxing, playing basketball and rugby. The catchphrase “Expect the Unexpected” is used in each scene to highlight the fact that things you might not expect to happen, do happen.
The young people reaped many benefits from their involvement in the programme including:
  • learning about each agency and their work
  • increasing knowledge of local hazards and what to do during an emergency
  • learning about disaster response
  • putting those learnings into a movie that was relevant to young people
  • connecting with professionals from within the community
  • learning how to make a movie which informed and entertained!
Our project was featured on the Ministry of Youth Development website.
